The Principles of Topography
Topography is based on geodesy, a discipline concerned with the shape and dimensions of the Earth. It seeks to determine elements such as the geographical coordinates of points, elevations, and deviations from the vertical.
Although geodesy deals with these same phenomena on a global scale, topography carries out analyses on a smaller and more detailed scale, producing plans and maps at various scales with the utmost precision.
Beyond the science of measurement, the term ‘topography’ also refers to the layout or relief of a given area. This provides a better understanding of the structure of a territory, whether natural or man-made.
